Hurrican Florence promps adjustments to SC High School League athletic schedule
Hurricane Florence affected the South Carolina High School League’s athletic schedule, and the league has made adjustments with some of the state championships being pushed back a week.
“The schools most affected by flooding and unable to practice or compete have expressed a strong desire to continue their season with the aid of an additional week and/or schedule considerations,” league commissioner Jerome Singleton said in a press release. “It is our hope to serve the best interest of the membership as a whole with consideration to those schools who have had their schedules revamped due to no fault of their own. We are fortunate to have a membership of team players supporting one another during this trying time. Thank you to everyone working to keep our students fully engaged in academics and athletics.”
The league’s executive committee has extended the regular season for football to add a Week 11. All games that were scheduled for Week 4 (Sept. 10-14) and were postponed because of the threat of the storm can be played the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 2.
The playoffs will begin Nov. 9 with the state championships pushed back to Dec. 7-8.
The volleyball and tennis state championships will be held Nov. 10.
In swimming, schools with swim teams in AAAA and AAAAA Region 6 and AAA Region 7 will be allowed to compete until October 2 for the purpose of submitting times for the state finals.
However, the state swimming championships will remain as scheduled as are cross country, competitive cheer and girls’ golf.
BE GIRLS’ TENNIS
The Bishop England girls’ tennis team appears to be in postseason form if the 9th annual Bishop England Invitational is any indication. The Bishops swept the field to run their record to 11-0.
