Lady Bishops Play Well in the Carolina Invitational

The Bishops open their region play this Friday against Garrett as they look to carry over their momentum from their Christmas tournament.

The Bishop England Lady Bishops’ Christmas tournament, the Carolina Invitational, went very well, as they beat two very good teams -- Durham Academy from North Carolina 57-37 and Hammond from South Carolina 49-41. Unfortunately, the Lady Bishops were also handed their first loss of the season by St. Basil Academy from Pennsylvania 49-40.
Lady Bishop Guard Rhetta Moore had an excellent tournament. In the games against Durham Academy and Hammond, Moore and at least one other Lady Bishop stepped up and delivered a solid performance. In the game against Durham, it was center Christine Egede; she finished with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Moore also played well, finishing with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. The game against Hammond was similar. Forward Caroline McQueeney finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, while Moore stuffed her stat sheet, finishing with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block.
The Lady Bishops lone stumble this season came in their final game against St. Basil. The Bishops put St. Basil on the foul line 39 times during the game, and St. Basil made 17 of them. Coach Runey felt that this contributed to more than the final score.
“We were forced late in the game to make a bunch of fouls because we just couldn’t get over the hump. It was a one possession or two possession game most of the time, and about halfway through the fourth quarter it was a two point game. But, they were in control. How they were playing defense on us and our inability to take them one on one just sort of gave them the upper hand. Point-wise we lost on the foul line, but the fact we couldn’t handle them individually was the big difference in the game.”
