Make the most of your best catches this month

Last year, I officiated the wedding of Amee and Andrew Moss. Amee is my niece and longtime fishing partner. She is a great angler and has the inherent ability to make me laugh. So, I always look forward to our time together. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seemed fitting to invite Amee and Andrew to go fishing.

We launched the Pathfinder into the second half of the falling tide. Our plan was to target trout as the tide fell and then switch to redfish at low tide. The weather was nice for February, sunny and cool with a light northeasterly breeze.

Our first fishing spot was a small creek that was draining into a larger creek channel. We could see fish stacked up in the channel on the depth finder. While I positioned the boat, Amee picked up her favorite fishing rod and tied on a Z-Man 1/5-ounce NedlockZ jig matched with a Finesse TRD lure. I was surprised when she handed the rod to Andrew. I thought to myself, now that is true love!

Andrew cast into the small creek and let the tide sweep his lure into the channel. A trout crushed the Finesse TRD. It was not a particularly large specimen. Andrew looked at Amee and said it was the second best catch of his life. As I framed the picture on my iPhone, I thought to myself, he stole my line!

The trout bite was steady until slack tide. So, we made a short run to some shallow water docks and switched our focus to redfish. Thankfully, the redfish were in residence and they were hungry. Amee and Andrew released several slot-size fish. With the sun getting low and the temperature dropping, we decided to call it a day.

On the ride back, I thought to myself, better order flowers and make a dinner reservation!
