CAROLINE WOZNIACKI & VENUS WIILLIAMS COMMIT TO 2017 VOLVO CAR OPEN
Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams have committed to play in the 2017 Volvo Car Open, to be held April 1 – 9 on Daniel Island. They join World No. 7 Madison Keys and Olympic Gold Medalist Monica Puig in the player field forming for the WTA premier tournament.
Wozniacki will compete in Charleston for the fifth time in 2017, where she holds a 14-3 record. She was a finalist in 2009 and won the title in 2011.
The former World No. 1 is currently having a resurgence during the second half of the 2016 WTA season, after enduring injuries earlier in the year. Now back in full swing, Wozniacki won titles in Toyko and Hong Kong, both in the past month, marking 25 total career wins. She also made the semifinals of the U.S. Open in September. Currently World No. 17, she will finish her ninth-straight season in the Top 20.
Venus Williams, the former World No. 1, will enter the Charleston tournament for the ninth time, where she holds a 20-7 record. She won the event in 2004 during her inaugural Charleston tournament appearance.
Williams has amassed 49 WTA titles in her career, including one in 2016 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She recently made the semifinals in Wimbledon, finals in Stanford and the fourth round of the US Open, which resulted in a thrilling three-set match that ended in a tiebreaker against Karolina Pliskova.
The nine-day Volvo Car Open is the largest women’s-only tennis tournament in North America, attracting an average of 90,000 attendees and more than 70 of the world’s top tennis players.
Tickets for the 2017 Volvo Car Open are now on sale. For more information on the tournament and ticket options, visit volvocaropen.com or call 800.677.2293.

CAROLINA CHALLENGE CUP RETURNS TO CHARLESTON
After a one year hiatus, the Carolina Challenge Cup (CCC) will return to Charleston in February 2017. The Charleston Battery will welcome Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Seattle Sounders, Columbus Crew SC, and Atlanta United to MUSC Health Stadium for a preseason tournament.
This year’s CCC will be the 13th staging of the tournament. The Charleston Battery first held the CCC in 2004, becoming one of the first lower-division American soccer clubs to host multiple MLS teams for preseason. The tournament has offered soccer fans in South Carolina the opportunity to see international superstars play in Charleston for more than a decade.
World Cup winners David Villa (NYCFC) and Ricardo Kaka (Orlando City SC) headlined CCC in 2015, bringing a global spotlight to Charleston and the Battery. This year’s CCC rosters include United States Men’s National Team players Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders) and Ethan Finlay (Columbus Crew SC), former Battery player Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle Sounders), and Trinidad & Tobago captain Kenwyne Jones (Atlanta United).
The four participating teams will play in a round robin style tournament with matches taking place over the course of three days in February. To purchase tickets, which go on sale November 25, visit charlestonbattery.com.
