Boat that departed from DI involved in collision on the Cooper River
Just after midnight on April 9, the Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch Center received a 911 call for a reported boating collision with people in the water on the Cooper River near the Ravenel Bridge. Marine, land and air units from the Charleston Fire Department (CFD), North Charleston Fire Department (NCFD), Mount Pleasant Fire Department (MPFD), Charleston Police Department (CPD), Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Charleston County EMS, and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) responded.
Charleston Fire Department Marine 101 arrived on scene to find a pleasure craft wedged in the dock near the Columbus Street Terminal and one occupant advising other occupants that were in the water. The vessel’s operator told responders that he and two companions were returning to Daniel Island from Shem Creek when they struck the dredge pipe in the Cooper River.
Marine 101’s crew conducted a quick search of the area, collected two of the occupants and delivered them to the Charleston Maritime Center. A third occupant was picked up by the USCG. Charleston County EMS evaluated and released the three boaters. North Charleston Fire Department Marine 201 remained with the damaged vessel and took preventive action to keep the vessel from sinking. SCDNR representatives were on scene to interview the boaters and are investigating the incident.
CFD would like to remind all boaters to reduce speed when operating at night, be sure to post lookouts, remain vigilant for obstacles in the water, and have all operators and passengers wear personal flotation devices.
STOCKADE STORAGE EXPERIENCES ANOTHER BREAK-IN
City of Charleston Police officers are investigating another break-in at the Stockade Storage facility on Daniel Island. They believe the most recent incident took place the weekend of April 1-2. Additional items were stolen from several boats stored at the facility, said Lt. James Byrne of Team 5. A separate incident took place the weekend of March 25-26.
A total of about 14 police reports have been taken thus far between the two incidents, added Byrne. The suspect or suspects once again entered the premises through a hole in the back fence, this time in a different location, said Lt. Byrne. The same items, mostly electronics, were targeted. Police are working on identifying those responsible for the break-ins. Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to call CPD at (843) 743-7200.
