Character counts at DIS

“Character, not circumstance, makes the person.” – Booker T. Washington

Students at the Daniel Island School are learning how to define character – and that expressing this important trait can truly make a difference in the world around them. As part of a “Do You Have Character?” program, the school is awarding prizes each month to those students who most effectively show character through submissions of writing and art based on a particular theme.

In November, the character trait of the month was “citizenship,” defined as the positive character of an individual viewed as a member of society who carries out the obligations and duties associated with being a citizen.” Earning the top prize in this category were 6th grader Miles Nguyen, 7th grader Charlotte Francis, and 6th grader JD Sutterlin. All received a free lunch from Subway for their winning entries. Check out their submissions on these pages!

The character trait for December was “generosity.” Look for those winners to be announced in an upcoming issue of The Daniel Island News.

CITIZENSHIP

By JD Sutterlin, 6th grader at Daniel Island School

When I hear the word citizenship I think of a person that is a helpful teammate in life and is a good citizen in their community and their state. The person that I think of as a good citizen is a person that runs a fundraiser. My mom Kendell runs a fundraiser to help type one diabetes which my sister has. This year will be her eleventh year of doing it and last year she raised over 500,000 dollars from other good citizens willing to donate for a cause. At school I think of it different, I think of it as a person that is willing to help out another friend and has respect. This year I have only been back for a few weeks now because I had surgery but everyone was a good citizen. They were very nice to me and helped me with anything that I did not have. That is what it means to have citizenship.
