Civil War and Black history writers headline February Daniel Island News Author Series event

Noted local Charleston authors Gordon Rhea and Herb Frazier will present their new books, focusing on the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, followed by discussion, Q&A and a book signing on Wed., Feb 23, 7 p.m. at the theater in Daniel Pointe, 514 Robert Daniel Dr., Daniel Island, SC.

This event is part of The Daniel Island News Author Series 2022.

South Carolina Civil War historian and author of seven award-winning books about the Civil War, Rhea will discuss his new book: “Stephen A. Swails: Black Freedom Fighter in the Civil War and Reconstruction.” Learn more at www.

Herb Frazier, co-author of “We Are Charleston: Triumph and Tragedy at Mother Emanuel,” co-edited “Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth.” This compilation of forty-five writers and poets provides insight into the struggles Black people faced as they made substantial contributions to America.  Margaret Seidler will discuss her essay “’Payne-ful’ Business: Illuminating Charleston’s Past” and poet James M. Brailsford, III will share “Deliver Us.”

The Daniel Island News Author Series 2022 is a yearlong monthly series connecting readers with local South Carolina authors and stimulating discussions, questions, and insights on a variety of topics and genres.

May 25 – Kathryn Smith (“Baptists & Bootleggers: A Prohibition Expedition Through the South…with Cocktail Recipes”) and a second author TBD.

June 29 - NY Time bestseller Mary Alice Monroe with Angela May – ticketed event at the Daniel Island Club.
