TEN YEARS AGO - NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
In the December 28, 2006 issue of the Daniel Island News, we reported ways people set goals for the new year. Other than exercising more and getting fit, some of the other resolutions that topped the list for many people were spending more time with family and friends, quitting smoking or drinking, getting out of debt, and getting organized.
In other news, we reported about the disappearing beach on the Isle of Palms due to rising sea levels. The beach erosion evidence was presented at a Charleston symposium on the impact of global warming and rising sea levels on coastlines during the next century. Sponsored by the Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, the workshop assembled state regulators, scientists, business leaders and local government officials to seek lasting solutions for coastal management. No state legislators attended the conference.
We also reported that recycling Christmas trees could help fish and wildlife. According to the Department of Natural Resources, instead of letting your Christmas tree take up space in a landfill, officials suggested sinking it, beaching it, mulching it or piling it up for wildlife. For example, if you ‘sink’ your tree, the tree provides a surface where aquatic insects live and grow. These insects in turn attract small fish that are fed upon by larger fish.
FIVE YEARS AGO - HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST WINNERS
In the December 29, 2011 issue of the Daniel Island News, we featured the winners of the Holiday Decorating Contest. There were three categories for winning: Best Overall, Best Children’s Theme, and Best Front Door.
Also in the news, we reported that The Berkeley County Bar Association held its December meeting to benefit the Lowcountry Orphan Relief fund. Bar members donated children’s clothing and toiletries to help abandoned, abused and neglected children in Berkeley County. The attorneys also raised cash donations for the LOR.
