TEN YEARS AGO - 'First Day of School' pictures!

In the August 23, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News, we featured pictures of the first day of school and “Meet the Teacher” night at Daniel Island School.

Our center spread focused on the trend of retirees spending their golden years on Daniel Island. In 2007, the island was recognized as one of America’s “100 Best Master-Planned Communities” in the July/August issue of Where to Retire Magazine. The editors reportedly sifted through hundreds of residential developments across the country to identify communities that offered today’s retirees a well-rounded, active lifestyle. John and Pat Dietz were interviewed about their move to Daniel Island. At age 56, while living in Knoxville, Tennessee with his wife, Pat, John was given an early retirement after spending more than 35 years in the workforce. They decided on Daniel Island in part because of the area’s volunteer opportunities. Some of the organizations they have supported include Meals on Wheels; the local soup kitchen; Family Circle Cup/Volvo Car Open; their downtown Charleston church, First Scots Presbyterian; the Daniel Island Garden Club; the Wine and Dine Club; The Preservation Society; prayer groups; book clubs; and other social gatherings - many of which they are stilled involved in 10 years later.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Football season is here!

In the August 23, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, much of the paper was devoted to “Back to School” pictures and the upcoming football season. The paper conducted a survey asking readers questions about their favorite football teams and their favorite players. At that time, the readers who responded to the survey came out overwhelmingly as Carolina fans. Just over 78 percent of our readers favored Carolina, with 21.7 percent favoring Clemson. It would be interesting to see what the results would be today!
