TEN YEARS AGO – Parenting expert Dr. David Walsh visited DIS.
An article published in the December 13, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News featured the demise of a plan to build a new retail, office and condominium complex near the intersection of I-526 and Clements Ferry Road. The 20-acre marsh-side property, owned by Clements Ferry Southwest LLC, was auctioned off in Berkeley County court to its mortgage lender in the wake of mounting financial and legal woes. Known as Daniel Island Village, the property was supposed to include more than 300 condominium units and 27,000 square feet of retail space. Housing 2000, a Texas-based group charged with developing the site, was one of the property’s investors. The company’s president, Fred Morgan, said he was initially approached by Tony Porter, a North Carolina developer, to take part in the Daniel Island Village venture. According to published reports, Porter ended up being investigated by the State Attorney General’s Office for several failed real estate deals.
In school news, Daniel Island School welcomed internationally known parenting expert and bestselling author Dr. David Walsh who spoke to a small group of parents, teachers and other community members at the school on a variety of parenting topics. His message: “The world is changing, parents.”
Walsh cited many reasons for what he described as a problem nearing epidemic status in our country. Perhaps most alarming was the statistic that the average screen time for a child in the United States is 44 hours per week.
“As of September 2006, there are now more television sets than there are people, and those are just the televisions in our homes,” he added. “Whoever tells the stories defines the culture…Traditional storytellers are being pushed aside and are being replaced with storytellers on screens, television screens, computer screens, and video screens.”
FIVE YEARS AGO – Sauer Grapes wine lounge opens on Daniel Island!
In the December 13, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, one of the feature articles spotlighted the opening of Sauer Grapes located at 885-C Island Park Drive at the time. A Charleston area resident for many years, Marie Sauer, the wine lounge owner, moved to Daniel Island in September of 2012 and felt a place where islanders could sample wines with her guidance and socialize in a relaxed atmosphere would be a fitting addition to the town’s business district. Sauer had this to say of her passion: “I love to review wines, taste them, spend a few days with them, pair them with foods.” Since then, Sauer Grapes has moved its location to 125 River Landing Dr., Ste. 102.
Also in the news was a report of a home burglarized in Codner’s Ferry Park. The burglary happened in broad daylight and, according to the police report filed on the incident, an unknown person or persons kicked in a rear door of the property, located in the 100 block of Beresford Creek Street, just before 3 p.m. After entry was made into the home, a security alarm sounded and police were notified. The culprit fled the scene, after taking some jewelry items, before officers arrived.
