TEN YEARS AGO
It was announced in an article in the December 25, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News that the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association would continue on, after a letter to the editor in a prior issue of the paper suggested that the group may “cease to exist in January” if volunteers did not come forward to take over for outgoing leadership. Many members were inspired to get involved.
In island news, the Holiday House Decorating Contest winners were announced.
In the “Island Life” section, pictures showcased children of all ages enjoying a winter wonderland on Daniel Island Drive. The snow was “provided” not by nature, but by Yard Icing, a local company at the time.

In business news, hundreds of Benefitfocus employees joined President and CEO Shawn Jenkins, Board Chairman Mason Holland, then Governor Nikki Haley and other dignitaries to officially commemorate the company’s announcement that it would soon be tripling the size of its technology campus on Daniel Island and adding some 1200 new jobs. A total of three new buildings would be built on the sprawling site, which would grow from 13 acres to 40 acres, beginning with a 145,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that is now known as the Customer Success Center.
