TEN YEARS AGO – Daniel Island School garden park in the works

In the February 14, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News, an article featured efforts to beautify the spacious natural areas in front of the Daniel Island School. The idea for the improvements took root among several community members. The two-acre tract, previously owned by the school, was re-deeded to the Daniel Island Company at a City of Charleston Planning Commission meeting. The area, once overgrown with weeds, vines and brush, had begun to fall below the island’s landscaping standards, said Jimmy Bailey, vice president of the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association (POA) at the time. With the enlisted help of the Daniel Island Garden Club, the seeds were soon planted for a wonderful new enclave of plants, trees, walkways and educational displays.

Another article in this issue spotlighted gifts for Valentine’s Day. The article author, Penny Heater, gave suggestions for the women, men and children on your list. Suggestions for women included jewelry, baking sweets, going out to dinner or ordering take-out, or a spa gift certificate. For men, she recommended visiting a local hardware shop for unique gifts or gift certificates. And then last but not least, Heater opted for an alternative to giving candy to kids and suggested planning an activity together.

FIVE YEARS AGO - 1st Congressional Race touches down on Daniel Island

A feature article in the February 14, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News highlighted an upcoming 1st Congressional District Candidate Forum to be held on Daniel Island. Former Daniel Island Business Association President Clyde Hiers remarked that hosting the forum on Daniel Island was indicative of the island’s interest in hearing from those who were seeking to represent the community in Washington.

While there were 19 contenders vying for the seat, the DIBA Forum Selection Committee established a criteria that included prior political experience; current pro-business attitude, expression and experience; financial capacity of the candidate’s campaign to sustain itself throughout the race; a demonstrated acute awareness of the Daniel Island business community and issues most relevant to DIBA; and pro-economic development.

“We established some basic criteria that said we can’t invite all 19 candidates,” added Hiers. “There just wasn’t enough time, and more importantly, if you do invite all 19, you’re not going to get any meaningful dialogue.” The DIBA committee came up with a list of candidates they deemed to be the race’s “top five contenders” to participate at the event: Sen. Larry Grooms, Rep. Chip Limehouse, former S.C. Governor Mark Sanford, John Kuhn, and Teddy Turner.

The issue also included an article about Valentine’s Day and how a sweet treat is the perfect way to say “I love you” to the important people in your life. Among the most popular treats listed to prepare and share were cookies, cakes and cupcakes.
