TEN YEARS AGO – Fourth of July celebration
The centerspread article in the July 3, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News was information about the island Fourth of July celebration. The Daniel Island Property’s Association sponsors activities for the whole family including pool-time, parade, cook outs, and fireworks. The tradition continues each year. Another article related to the fourth was about how to keep pets calm and safe during fireworks. 1. Leave your pets at home and indoors. Most pets are afraid of fireworks and may try to run away.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Where do you launch your boat?

In the July 4, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News, a feature article was all about local boat landings and what option islanders have for water access. With only two private landings on Daniel Island (DI Park/Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek landing) there was mention of adding a third public landing to the island. Former Berkeley County Councilman and Chairman of the Berkeley County Finance Committee Tim Callanan was a big proponent of adding a new boat landing next to Governors Park, just under the I-526 overpass. This project is still in the planning stages. Steve Brown, a renter on Daniel Island at the time who launched his boat at Highway 41 about three times a month, told us he assumed he’d be able to use the landing at Bellinger Island but discovered later that it was only for members of the Daniel Island POA. “I would very definitely use a ramp at Governors Park,” Brown says. “I think that would be a wonderful asset to the community. I also believe it could be helpful in making DI a destination and could bring off-islanders who would help support local business.”
