TEN YEARS AGO
In the April 30, 2009 edition of the paper, it was reported that the Daniel Island waterfront marina was put on hold and that the bridge to Rhoden Island was under construction. The issue, which featured a boating and fishing theme, included articles about the Daniel Island Fishing Club (at the time it was in its seventh year) and Barrier Island Eco Tours.
In Island Life, there was a photo page of pictures from the Chamber Music Charleston event on Daniel Island and the 2009 Hair and Fashion Show Trends held at Pierce Park Pavilion.
FIVE YEARS AGO
In the May 1, 2014 edition of the paper, an article spotlighted the new flagship high school planned for the Daniel Island and Cainhoy communities (now known as Philip Simmons High School). It was reported that the new Berkeley County school would include a number of unique features different from those found in traditional schools. Plans for the $63 million school and campus were unveiled at a community meeting held on April 24 that year at Cainhoy Elementary Middle School.
The centerspread article included news that the Daniel Island Property Owners Association would be offering water sports on Bellinger Island. The new offerings came about after more than 100 residents indicated on a POA survey the previous fall that they would be interested in taking part in water sports. The POA purchased four stand-up paddleboards, three tandem kayaks, and three single kayaks. All are stored in a specially built wooden locker near the Bellinger Island boat ramp.
