TEN YEARS AGO – Daniel Island entrepreneurs fulfill dreams
In the May 1, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News, the feature article was about entrepreneurs and how they fulfill their dreams by owning their own businesses. One of the entrepreneurs mentioned in the article was Doug Clarke. After working with Glasspro, an auto glass replacement service, for nine years, he decided to purchase Carolina Car Care, a car wash and detailing shop with an adjoining “quick lube” in Mount Pleasant. He then joined with a partner to create a Glasspro Pit Stop at the site with a race car theme. Today, the business is named Pit Stop Auto and Tire.
In other news, wastewater and sewer lines were the topics at a meeting of the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association (DINA). Jenny Hagan, public relations manager of the Charleston Water System at the time, presented facts and figures relating to Charleston’s water supply and wastewater treatment. At the meeting she asked, “Does anyone remember all the water quality problems in the harbor?” referring to a period in the 1970s in Charleston. “Basically you couldn’t swim, fish or do anything in the harbor because it was so polluted. Wastewater was discharged directly into the harbor with no treatment at all.”
She explained that the Lowcountry’s water quality has come a long way since then. In 2007, the Charleston Water System met or exceeded all water quality regulations, according to a recent report released by the company. Not bad for a system that provides water for about 400,000 people and has the capacity to treat some 37 million gallons of wastewater each day, added Hagan.
FIVE YEARS AGO – DI family paddles for Dragon Boat Charleston
One of the feature articles in the May 2, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News was about Daniel Island resident Kelly Hood and her participation in Dragon Boat Charleston (DBC). When Kelly finished treatments for colon cancer in 2008, she was ready for a fresh new start on life. A friend told her about the DBC mission. “I looked it up on the website and started coming out to paddle and just loved it from the start!” said Kelly, who in 2013 was completely cancer-free. In fact, Kelly was so taken with the sport that she invited her husband, Jeff, to join in the following year. Their son, Josh, age 14 at the time, started paddling with them in 2012.
In business news, members of the Daniel Island Business Association voted in its new board at its regularly scheduled meeting. The new officers were: President – Pete Harper; Vice President – Ryan Funke; Treasurer – Kim Fulp; Secretary/Social – Sheila Underwood & Rita Hammond; Organizational Liason & Meeting Program Coordinator – Ray Schipani; Membership Director –Clyde Hiers; Technology / Communication Director – Stiles Bee; Phone Book / Marketing Materials – Holly White.
