FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the October 14, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold captured the many flags of Daniel Island. The different and assorted flags being flown from island porches included 86 American flags, 7 USC flags, and a variety of other flags.

In community news, there was an article that featured an interview with then new house majority leader and island resident Jim Merrill. Jim identified the top legislative items on his agenda as tax reform, restructuring, school choice, job creation, legislation to eliminate taxpayer funded lobbyists, and funding the construction of new bridges and roads.

The Island Life page featured photos and reviews from the Hootie concert, from the Hall and Oates concert and Frankie Beverly and the Maze – all at the Family Circle Tennis Center (now known as the Volvo Car Stadium).

TEN YEARS AGO

In the October 15, 2009 edition of the paper the cover and centerfold featured the Race for the Cure and personal stories of dealing with breast cancer – the features included a personal account about Barbara Visser, a Daniel Island resident who was celebrating 15 years of being cancer free, as well as many reader submitted recollections and stories about living and surviving a cancer diagnosis.

In business news, DI resident Steve Parker, who launched www.breastcancerawareness.com, created a public service announcement (PSA) featuring tennis star and celebrity Venus Williams.

Island Life photo pages included photos of the Blessing of the Animals and Park Day.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the October 16, 2014 edition of the paper the cover and centerspread highlighted the Race for the Cure event on Daniel Island. The article included local experts who helped readers understand the disease in different capacities. Each of these professionals served patients and survivors along the “journey” of the disease. They provided not only a closer look at the profound battle over 230,000 new patients face each year, but also some tangible handles of hope.

In other news, two Daniel Island residents, Mindy Ryan and Mac McQuillin, were featured as candidates for the upcoming school board election. And there was an article about the upcoming Harvest Tour of Homes event on the island.

In sports, Bishop England beat Battery Creek 27-21.
