Earth Day activities take root at DIS Community Garden!

The Daniel Island School and Community Garden celebrated Earth Day on Saturday, April 22 with the first annual Daniel Island Earth Day Fair. The garden, located at Daniel Island School, was the back drop and the focal point for the festivities showcasing earth-friendly garden practices such as community gardening, composting, rain water collection, butterfly way stations, hummingbird and pollinator gardening and much more.

The Daniel Island School and Community Garden volunteers work year round to create this beautiful bountiful and educational garden. Volunteers gave tours of the garden, demonstrating to the visitors the sustainable, natural and healthy vision the gardeners share with each other and the Daniel Island School children who participate in the educational garden programs. Children enjoyed environmentally-friendly activities, such as planting seeds in recycled newspaper containers and re-purposing denim from cut-off jeans to make Earth Day bags. The youngest children shared in the fun by watering plants with water from the rain barrels.

There was a native plant sale featuring indigenous plants from David Manger’s Roots and Shoots nursery in West Ashley, a wholesome bake sale with treats from Saveur du Monde in Mount Pleasant and a homemade lemonade stand run by Daniel Island School Beta Club students. The Lowcountry Street Grocers’ bus made a stop to invite attendees to climb aboard and shop for local farmers’ goods and produce. The Daniel Island School and Community Garden Earth Day Fair was sponsored by the Daniel Island Community Fund and gifts from Publix and Saveur du Monde.
