Free summer meals available at Philip Simmons Elementary

Families looking for meal assistance while school is out this summer will have access to free breakfasts and lunches through Berkeley County School District's Summer Meal Program.

For Daniel Island and Clements Ferry area families, Philip Simmons Elementary School will serve as one of the district's meal sites, offering free meals to all children and teens throughout the summer.

The district's Seamless Summer Option program begins Monday, June 8, and runs through Friday, July 24. Nutritious hot breakfasts and lunches will be served Monday through Friday at participating schools.

Breakfast will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be served from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The program, funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is open to all children and teens at approved sites, regardless of income. Federal guidelines require meals to be eaten on-site, although items such as fresh fruit may be taken afterward.

Participating schools include:

- Philip Simmons Elementary School – 2095 Seven Sticks Drive, Wando

- Berkeley Middle School – 320 N. Live Oak Drive, Moncks Corner

- Cross High School – 1293 Old Highway 6, Cross

- Devon Forest Elementary School – 1127 Dorothy St., Goose Creek

- Foxbank Elementary School – 169 Foxbank Plantation Blvd., Moncks Corner

- Goose Creek Elementary School – 200 Foster Creek Road, Goose Creek

- St. Stephen Elementary School – 1053 Russellville Road, St. Stephen

- Westview Primary School – 98 Westview Blvd., Goose Creek

Meals will not be served on Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

In addition to serving children directly, churches and nonprofit organizations may apply to receive meals from participating sites for summer programs and activities. Families can find menus and additional information at berkeleynutrition.net.
