Full STEAM ahead at Daniel Island School!
Editors note: On March 3 and 4, Daniel Island News writers Elizabeth Bush and Jennifer Johnston participated in career day mini sessions with eighth graders at Daniel Island School. As part of the curriculum on journalism, our staff tasked the middle schoolers with creating a headline and “hook” (lead-in paragraph) for two upcoming news stories: the following STEAM night piece and the summer camp article on page 16. From the 50 submissions for each story, one set was selected for print. Eighth grader Erin O’Connor submitted the winning headline and hook for this story. Congratulations, Erin – not too shabby for only five minutes to write!
In a world focused mainly on sports, Daniel Island School is bringing academics and arts back in. STEAM, a program on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, is making a comeback in schools across the Lowcountry, including our very own DIS elementary and middle school.
On Thursday, March 3, Daniel Island School invited the community to an evening dedicated to all things STEAM. Offering 14 “visit stations” throughout the school’s multi-purpose room and cafeteria, the program featured student displays, demonstrations from local organizations, and fun family challenges. A preview of the DIS drama class’ upcoming production of “Peter Pan” was delivered two times during the event, and the school’s Science Fair winners were also announced. To cap off the evening, the DIS PTA doubled-down on their raffle, deciding to give away two Dell Chromebooks instead of just one, due to overwhelming participation in the contest. It was a sensational event by all accounts: well-attended, high-energy, and super-inspiring.
