Thursdays, a six week series running from Oct. 6 to Nov. 10, 10:30 a.m. – noon. Join Dr. Lester Pittman to examine the evolution of American interests and policies in the Middle East. Learn how nationalism, Israel, oil, religion, the Cold War, and terrorism have influenced relations between the United States and the peoples and states of the Middle East.
Oct. 6 – “Commerce & Christianity” 1800-1914: The Middle East in the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire, Barbary Wars, American merchants and missionaries.
Oct. 13 – “The Peace to End All Peace” 1914-1945: First World War in the Middle East, British and French imperialism, the discovery of oil. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, Palestine, the Second World War.
Oct. 20 – “Collision of Nationalisms” 1945-1973: the Creation of Israel, Egyptian Revolution, and the Arab-Israeli Wars 1956, 1967 & 1973.
Oct. 27 – “Unintended Consequences” 1973-1990: Politics of Oil, the Iranian Revolution & Hostage Crisis, Soviet-Afghan War, Palestinians, Iran-Iraq War.
Nov. 3 – “Pax Americana?” 1991-2011: First Gulf War, Failure of the Oslo Peace, al-Qa’ida, Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.
Nov. 10 – “Present Disorder” 2011-2016: Arab Spring, Iran & Iraq, Turkey & the Kurds, Syrian Civil War, ISIS, and the Clash of Islams.

BACK TO SCHOOL HELP
Here are programs, led by a teaching professional, that will get you get up to speed with the new teaching methods and help you assist your child with homework. Homework Apps – Monday, Oct. 3, 3:30-4:30 p.m. New day and time. Sarah Catto, from the Daniel Island School, will show you some great apps to help with homework along with Internet and phone safety tips. Math Strategies - Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2-3 p.m. Part 2 - Multiplication & Fractions.
FRIDAY FUN
Oct. 7, 10 a.m. -12. Come join the fun and make something different. Once a month, craft something new, decorative and seasonal recycling old books. All supplies provided. Please register due to limited space.

CHARLESTON GHOST STORIES
Thursday, Oct. 27, 5-6 p.m. Jonathan Jackson, a Charleston guide, will take us on a virtual tour of the Holy City revealing some mysteries and telling tales about the ghosts and goblins that haunt it. Space is limited; please pick up a ticket at the desk.
RECORDER CLASS
Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m. For beginning or “rusty” adults and teens who want to learn to play in a group setting. Prior recorder or other musical experience not required. Reading music is also not a prerequisite.
PAWS FOR READING
Saturdays, noon - 1:30 p.m. This program is designed to help children who are struggling with their reading skills when compared to peers their age by reading to a certified therapy dog. It encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to. Session is 20 minutes, by appointment only.
ZEN COLORING
Thursdays, 1-3 p.m. Relax and enjoy the latest rage, coloring for adults. Color away your problems and feel the positive energy flow as you create your own masterpiece. All supplies provided.
