Ribbon-cutting planned for new Cainhoy area fire station
The community is invited to join Mayor John J. Tecklenburg and Interim Charleston Fire Chief Joseph Roberts at a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 27 at 1 p.m. for Fire Station 21.
The station, located at 1155 Cainhoy Rd., will serve residents in the Cainhoy peninsula and Daniel Island and will be the new home for Engine 121, Tender 121, and five full-time personnel each day.
The City of Charleston has been working to establish a permanent fire station in the upper Cainhoy peninsula since 2012. Progress has been delayed due to issues related to land acquisition. On January 31, 2017, the City of Charleston opened a mobile, temporary facility providing residents improved coverage following an evaluation by the Insurance Service Office (ISO). The mobile facility was utilized in order to quickly address the service capabilities in the area until a more traditional station could be constructed.
On June 14 of this year, construction was completed on a more traditional fixed facility adjacent to the mobile station and firefighters have made the transition to the new building. The new location is intended to serve as a fire station for the next three to five years or until a permanent location can be identified. Look for coverage of the ribbon-cutting event in the July 5 issue of The Daniel Island News.
