What do you know? May 4, 2017

Congratulations to Bill Goff, this week’s winner of the Daniel Island Historical Society’s “What do you know?” history trivia contest. Here is the question that appeared in the April 20 edition of The Daniel Island News, as well as the correct answer:

Question: Starting in 1905, there were three piers located along the Wando River and one on Bellinger Island. All were used to ship produce from the truck farming industry off Daniel Island. Can you name them? (Hint: some of our streets today are named for them.) Answer: Scott Pier (Bellinger Island), Acme Pier, Mitchell Pier and Pole Grove Pier.

A. F. Young Company would install these piers shortly after they purchased the land in 1905. The piers were essential to the trunk farming business on Daniel Island. It was the most efficient way to get the vegetables off the island to the railheads, which then would take them north to be sold. The piers are named after the farms they served.
