Noshing Nirvana: The best thing you ate all month

This month’s nirvana goes “off-island.” It also sort of goes to opposite ends of the food spectrum, from a gooey, carnivorous hand-to-piehole delight to a lighter, crunchier fork-shuttled creation. And you might be surprised which one was submitted by a kid.

Amanda Young, of the Etiwan Park Youngs, touts the lofty merits of the “truffle burger” from Bohemian Bull on Folly Road in Charleston. And that’s where the fancy stops. Because this bunned patty-n-friends is big, messy, and unwilling to be put down. You will just have to get to the fries (which are also fantastic) once you can shift burger grip to a single hand. The Bull’s truffle burger is topped with creamy truffle mayo, grilled mushrooms, a giant crispy onion ring, and smoked gouda – and every bite hits every layer. Amanda maintains it is well worth the 25 minute drive from Daniel Island. “Sometimes I wake up and I’m like, ‘I need a truffle burger,’” she discloses, adding that it is pure genius for post-run or late-night recovery. “Also, their back yard keeps my three year-old entertained so I get five minutes alone to eat it... win/win.”

At Verde in Mount Pleasant, tween resident Kate Johnston likes to create her own salad. And the last one she built was, according to her, the best yet. Her chopped bowl contained simple perfection of romaine, pears, cucumbers, broccoli, more pears, roasted chicken, sharp white cheddar, and balsamic vinaigrette. Oh, and a stout hunk of steakhouse-type bread. The meal cost around $11, but as the fork stopped moving halfway through the generous pile, her lunch left nearly enough for dinner. “I love that it is healthy, but there are so many yummy things to choose from,” stated the sixth-grader. “And everything is so fresh and chopped into bites.”

Want to share your tale of noshing nirvana? It’s simple – just respond to the following: 1) Where were you served the best thing you ate all month? 2) What was the food that left you speechless (mainly because you couldn’t stop horking it down)? 3) Can you describe what made the dish so magical? Be sure to speak slowly... 4) Dish more on the dish, if you can - price, portion size, availability on regular menu, and the psychological repercussions of consuming something so rad. 5) Please email a photo of your to-die-for dish and responses to the four questions above (don’t leave any out!) to jennifer@thedanielislandnews.com.
