Daniel Island School is Common Sense Certified
The Daniel Island School (DIS) is now a Common Sense Certified School for Digital Citizenship. The announcement about the certification was made recently by Common Sense, a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping students and their families safely navigate digital media and technology. According to a press release from the Berkeley County School District, DIS has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing students to use the power of digital media to explore, create, connect and learn, while limiting the risks that exist online. “We applaud the faculty and staff of Daniel Island School for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of its student education,” said Jessica Lindl, head of Common Sense Education. “Daniel Island School deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.” “We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified School,” added DIS Principal Kori Brown. “By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them unlimited opportunities to maximize and personalize their learning.”
Daniel Island Academy earns national re-accreditation
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has re-accredited the Daniel Island Academy (DIA), a private, licensed, early childhood development school serving over 250 children ages 1-5 from across the tri-county area. The NAEYC offers a voluntary accreditation system designed to set the highest professional standards for early childhood education programs across the country. Of the 7,000 programs accredited by NAEYC nationwide, there are only 92 in South Carolina – and Daniel Island Academy is one of only two non-governmental preschools in the Lowcountry to earn the designation. “Since inception, Daniel Island Academy has offered the finest early-education curriculum to its students and their families,” said DIA School Director Kerry Nowosielski. “NAEYC continues to set the bar for early-education standards across the country, and I commend our entire team for giving our children the best learning experience possible.” To prepare for re-accreditation, the DIA administration and teachers conducted extensive annual self-assessments across both full-day and half-day programs to ensure they met the 10 NAEYC program standards that seek to benefit five groups of stakeholders in early childhood education learning – including children, teachers, families, the program administration and the community.
District announces make-up days for Hurricane Matthew closure
Berkeley County School District (BCSD) officials recently announced that Friday, February 17, 2017 and Monday, April 17, 2017 will serve as the make-up days for Wednesday, October 5, and Thursday, October 6. These October instructional days were missed as a result of Hurricane Matthew. In accordance with South Carolina House Bill 3890, the Berkeley County School Board (BCSB) voted to waive the make-up requirement for the remaining two days, October 7 and October 10, also missed as a result of Hurricane Matthew.
Daniel Island Grille to award scholarships to BEHS students
The Daniel Island Grille will present a $500 scholarship to one male student and one female student from Bishop England High School for the 2017-2018 school year. The popular island eatery has changed the name of their most popular burger, the Western Burger, to the “Bishop Burger” to raise funds for the effort. Now through Spring of 2017, one dollar from every Bishop Burger sold will go towards the scholarship fund. Daniel Island Grille will also host “Double Down Nights,” where two dollars from every Bishop Burger sold after a home sporting event at Bishop England will support the cause. The scholarship recipients will be chosen in April 2017 based on athletics, grades and community involvement. The scholarship can be used for textbooks, tuition, school supplies and more.
