PROVIDED At the Dec. 6 Rotary Club of Daniel Island meeting, members heard a presentation from guest speaker Stephanie M. Kelley, executive director at East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO). Stephanie reminded those in attendance that not only does ECCO act as a food bank and a place for basic needs (clothing, household furnishings, etc.), it is also a place for individuals to receive assistance with financial aid, dental/medical care, prescriptions, counseling, and educational opportunities. “The Rotary Club of Daniel Island is very proud to have a mutual partnership with ECCO, working with them on various projects as well as them being a beneficiary from our Duck Race in years past,” said Rotarian Derek Epperson. PROVIDED At the Nov. 29 meeting of the Daniel Island Rotary Club, Evan Aluise of Tiger Corner Farms spoke to members about their aeroponic container farm located in Summerville, SC. What is aeroponic farming you ask? Well, in short, it’s a method of farming that’s done in recycled shipping containers. Yes, that’s right, shipping containers! By growing plants aeroponically, it reduces the risk for soil-borne diseases, explained Rotarian Derek Epperson. “Because the roots are exposed to more oxygen, the plants grow faster, making aeroponics safer and more efficient,” said Epperson. “It was a fascinating presentation.” To learn more about aeroponic farming, visit http://tigercornerfarmsmfg.com. Here are some snapshots of some of the fun activities and happenings involving the Rotary Club of Daniel Island over the last couple of months.
