TEN YEARS AGO – The double life of Daniel Island’s Corvette Aficionados
An article in the April 3, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News spotlighted a Daniel Island couple whose passion was fast cars! When the Sheldon’s six grown children had finally moved out of the house, they added some vavoom to their lives by buying a Corvette at a Carlisle, Pa. auto show.
“We’d raised our kids and just felt like we needed a life,” recalled Kim, who grew up in a family that loved jazzed-up cars. “We’d been to the Carlisle show a few times before and I told my husband, ‘Bring some money with you because I told everybody at work that I’m coming home with a Corvette.’ That’s how it all started.” The Sheldons led double lives. During the week, the Sheldons lived normal lives with normal jobs, but in the evenings and on the weekends it was an entirely different matter. That’s when their garage door opened, they emerged in a growling 2007 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, and turned onto Blakeway Street to rumble off to destinations and adventures unknown.
In other news, it was reported that two of Daniel Island’s organizations had elected new officers. Daniel Island School’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) had elected new leadership for the 2008-2009 school year. Elected volunteers were John Thomson, vice president; Kristen Odell, president; Monica Berenguer, secretary; and Julie Hollar, treasurer. Plus, the Daniel Island Business Association elected a new slate of executive officers. Leading the organization for the 2008-2009 term were Kim Fulp, secretary; Tim Hilkhuijsen, vice president; and Greg Turner, president.
FIVE YEARS AGO – All about tennis
In the April 4, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News a major theme of the paper was the Family Circle Cup, which was in full swing on the island. One article reported several top players answers to the question: How do you mentally prepare? Here are a few of the players’ responses. Serena Williams: “I try not to get involved in too many rituals because I feel like it’s crazy, it’s draining, like you just have to do the same thing. I’ve been there, and I don’t want to do that.” Caroline Wozniacki: “I know when I go out there, I have a plan in ma head of how I want to play. It is specific to each opponent, but you also want to play your own game.” Sloane Stephens: “I’ll listen to music. I listen to old music now, but then I’ll go back to young music. Like the Carpenters - they’re old. My pre-school graduation song was ‘We’ve Only Just Begun.’”
In political news, former Governor Mark Sanford popped in to Honeycomb Café on Daniel Island, hoping to connect with a few more voters in his bid for the open First Congressional District Seat. Sanford faced a run-off with fellow Republican candidate Curtis Bostic, which he ultimately won.
