Readers weigh in on what’s needed on Clements Ferry
Poll question:
With more and more housing and apartment developments springing up along the Clements Ferry corridor, the need for resident services also increases. While there are some retail and hospitality services available – the Point Hope development has sprouted several opportunities – the area has previously been better known for more office and commercial operations. What types of retail and hospitality services would you like to see added along the corridor?
Comments:
• Community Center Recreation that doesn't charge extra for folks that have been here, that their address is Wando 29492, Starbucks, CVS!
• Ethnic food options. Parks, trails, outdoor entertainment. A drive-in movie theater. Art studio for pottery, painting, etc. Rec center with sports fields and trails.
• We need more retail stores, restaurants and fast food with drive-thru.
• Entertainment venues for families would be great. Even restaurants with an actual outdoor space not on the main road with entertainment for kids and adults. Grocery shopping other than Dollar stores and Publix. Playgrounds not neighborhood specific! Somewhere to ride bikes, roller skate and play.
• Bowling, golf simulator, indoor pickleball, movies in a waterfront shopping plaza containing shops, restaurants, playground, nice waterside walkways, and great places for coffee, brunch, etc, that hosts a weekly farmers market.
• A rec center for kids and adults, a park, and waterfront walking trails!!!
• Another grocery store near 526, smaller like Lidl or Aldi.
• Movie theater; bowling alley; par 3 golf course; Dave ‘n Busters.
• Coffee shops, Trader Joes. Include sidewalks with bike trails that connect Clements Ferry Road to Daniel Island, Ethos GYM.
• Also need a pharmacy like CVS or Walmart.
• Please build a combination of several small public green spaces to serve this community. There is land available now to add public parks, interconnected walking trails, a splash pad, a public dock for boating and fishing. We want to be a NICE extension of Daniel Island. Not a cheap imitation. Point Hope will be so nice. Let’s bring that same vibe to the rest of CFR.
• Amenities such as a public pool or large pak - location to access the water.
• A turn lane into Country Oaks Lane (our neighborhood) so we don’t die trying to turn in. A traffic light will be way better. If any cannot be done, be sure that the police or sheriff will be watching for the [drivers] flying on Clements Ferry Road.
• Climbing gym
• Unique, LOCAL eat-in restaurants please. We don’t want to look like Ashley Phosphate or Rivers. Please use sensible and decorative signage for all roads and green buffers between businesses and roads.
• Boutiques, a store with basic electronics such as phone chargers and computer cables, a small office supply store.
• Seriously, just move elsewhere. Nobody who was here before the apartments and subdivisions minded making a drive to receive services. We need the trees to help with flooding. We're going to go from the Lowcountry to underwater country.
• Neighborhood bar/restaurants
• Family owned restaurants
• Zaxby's
• Retail and Eat-in restaurants (not chain fast food). Trader Joe’s!!! YMCA
• Walking trails and an indoor Community Center for working out/sports e.g. basketball for children and adults.
• As someone in Commercial Real Estate, I’m shocked that the County Officials have approved and continue to allow the unfortunate unbalance of residential v commercial zoning. The amount of traffic without proper stoplights on Clements Ferry Road is out of control and poorly planned. We need more retail – restaurants, small and large businesses, think one large Anchor (Target) with smaller boxes for other businesses. We need parks, there are so many deer and wildlife roaming around our neighborhoods here, it’s so sad. Please do something! No more apartments!
• Automotive support.
• Eat-in restaurants that are not chains
• Banks
• Bike/walking trails to connect the neighborhoods.
• Post Office, more traffic lights
• U.S. postal service (office). Berkeley County Govt Service Office (Annex), SCDMV.
• Restaurants, brewery
• Would love to have a combination of both more retail and eat-in restaurants.
• Target!
• Parks. River access. Public boat ramp.
• Trader Joes
• I would love a venue like the Barrel was on James Island, off leash dog park, bar.
• Nothing. Slow down. The area is already saturated with upcoming housing and infrastructure, and cannot sustain upcoming developments.
• Local Coffee Shops
• Recreational Center for this side of Berkeley. Kids need activities in this area.
• A full continuous path from Daniel Island to Highway 41 for running/walking. Outdoor exercise, a nice park. Or at the very least a YMCA that offers classes. But I think we all would prefer a continuous path on both sides if it were just one thing.
• Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, etc.
• Bank. Wells Fargo
• I think we should have minimal development to preserve some of the remaining natural beauty.
• Public swimming pool or YMCA.
• Banks, pharmacies
• Parking garage and mass transit to get cars off the road.
• Full gym with a room for kids while moms work out.
• Auto parts store, Berkeley County Library branch, Farmers Market, greenspace/parks.
• Trees, stop removing what made the area nice.
• Storage units
• Access to the Wando River and/or Cooper River. Disc golf course. Dog park.
• Anything! With Hardee’s gone all we have is Bojangles. Maybe a Chick-fil-A.
• Less drive through. I would love to see more community/family based entertainment.
• More schools to accommodate the growing population of 29492.
• We need parks, trails, recreation centers, gyms, YMCAs, etc. People are driving to Daniel Island to take their kids to sport activities. Opportunities like this should be closer.
• Quicker response time emergency services, YMCA.
• Drug store
• City park or city pool for recreation. My neighborhood doesn’t have a pool and I have to go to the city pools in downtown Charleston for lap and recreational swimming.
• Drive-thru, dine-in restaurants, daycare, indoor play area, retail stores, hair salon, spa, massage, gym, hospitals, clinics, fire station & police substation.
• Low to moderate income housing
• Family style, country cooking, eat-in restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
• Would love options to avoid having to go to Mount Pleasant.
• An auto place for car parts, entertainment, eat-in restaurants, drive-through restaurants, and retail.
• There need to be parks or other areas where people can get together. This is a very sad road.
• I completely avoid CFR so I don’t care what they put there. Totally overdeveloped. Shameful.
• More stop lights and speed abatement for drivers needing to turn left from the side roads.
• Hairdressers.
• Affordable recreation that include Wando, SC 29492
• Nothing terribly large but a degree of convenient stores. Or an Aldi. As mentioned above, some more ethnic food options. Not another burger joint.
• TJMaxx, Target, auto/oil change services, McDonald's restaurants. We need shopping centers!!!
• A Verde or Cava, a brewery within Point Hope, a library, and a waterfront restaurant!
• Primo Hoagies and Steaks
• Good sit-down seafood, Italian, sushi & other restaurants please! Old Navy, boutique clothing stores. Martini bar, other upscale bars.
• Chick Fil A, Raising Canes, Target, YMCA, police station, fire Station, southern breakfast place, etc.
• Burton's. Cod Fathers. Sesame Burger.
• Chick -fil-A, Arby's, Jimmy John's, Aldi or Lidl.
• Sushi restaurant, family restaurants with kid areas outside, waterfront dining, boutiques, Target
• Chick-fil-A, Walmart, drug store
• Chinese food!!!
• Aldi or Trader Joe’s, Taco Boy, 5 Guys Burgers, CVS or Walgreens, Homegoods or Marshalls, Hobby Lobby, Chipotle.
• I'd like to see more eat-in restaurants.
• IKEA, furniture stores
• Target, Harris Teeter, Trader Joe’s, smaller junior anchors, coffee shops, healthy options, parks with walking trails, juice bar.
• No Target or Walmart, but with all the families a Belks, TJMaxx, Home Goods, Once Upon A Child would be nice.
• Jiffy Lube or Autozone
• Sully’s Steamers Bagels
• If Hardee’s can’t make it, what will? Smart growth and access are key. We also need ARB from the county to limit the horrible signage and trashy retail crap that litters the road. …Berkeley County really needs to stop ignoring our COASTAL BERKELEY COUNTY.
• A variety of places to eat (Chinese, Italian, Southern food ) and some drive-thru options (Chick-fil-A or Zaxbys). Definitely more shops. Maybe a Target, another grocery store, rec center (sports, gym and swimming). With all this new housing being built we definitely need more things around.
• Bakery, garden/nursery, clothing, hair salons
• Whole Foods; Trader Joe’s;
• Bad Daddy's Burger Bar
• Outdoor recreation options with food/bev. Bowling Alley, Movie Theater. Huge Waterpark.
Groceries (Harris Teeter, Aldi, Whole Foods), clothing, supermarket (Walmart, Target), more sit down local restaurants (not chains), a gym, more doctors offices, auto center like Gerald’s, Midas, etc.
• Bar/restaurant with live bands and pool tables.
• Home Depot/Lowes, Chipotle, Target, bank, UPS store.
• Off-leash dog park bar, a pickleball club, a gym, non-chain sit down restaurants that are not Mexican, Target.
• Department store
• Dine in family restaurants. Waffle House!
• Mostly a continuous path on both sides if it were just one thing. Retail - Target. Restaurants - Burtons, Basil, Taziki or a Greek restaurant. Healthy sit down restaurants.
• Boutique shops that promote small, local businesses.
• I would like to see preservation.
• We need a sidewalk/bike path on the end that has already been built. This was supposed to happen but no movement yet.
• A well equipped large dog park! Recreation complex!
• TJMaxx/HomeGoods/Marshalls/Costco
• Target and eat-in restaurants - sushi (Wasabi, Ok-u), local fresh fish (Magnolia, 167 Raw, Red Drum), steakhouse (BURTONS PLEASE!!!!), thai (BASIL PLEASE!!!)
• Sermets vibe type restaurant.
• Quality eat in/ take out/delivery food that’s done well and not the same dishes every other part of town offers unless it’s exceptional.
• Advance Auto Parts, Berkeley County Library branch, Rio Chico Mexican Restaurant
• Dive bars
• Inexpensive “fast casual” style restaurants for families with healthy options - Chipotle, Cava, Come Back Shack (or other non-franchises options).
• Five Loaves, Graze, Trader Joe’s, more recreational areas like trails and water access
• Hotels for out of town guests are needed. Local fast casual like Boxcar Betty’s, Come Back Shack, or drive throughs like Canes or Zaxbys. Public parks and playgrounds with walking trails and water access.
• Longhorns or any steakhouse would do.
• Max Fitness franchise
• We need more grocery store options and retail such as Target.
• Spa or gym. Bike and walking paths to get everywhere so we don't have to drive everywhere. It's small enough to have pedestrian pathways.
• A smoothie shop.
• No chain restaurants. Primary care options for families, adults and kids.
• Community recreation center, including pool and basketball gymnasium. The DI rec center is too small, and there is no community pool for our growing population to join.
• Seafood market.
• More upscale restaurants, bank, hair salon/wellness spa.
• Bank, post office, Amazon drop spot, CVS/Walgreens, Moes, Greek or Mediterranean food,
• Non-chain coffee, healthy fast food.
• More restaurant/retail centers similar to Nexton, with a steakhouse like Hall’s. (No steakhouses on Daniel Island currently). Other businesses requested: Wawa, Tijuana Flats, Einstein Bagels. Also more red lights to slow down traffic and make it safer to enter and exit neighborhoods. Thank you!
• I’d like to see some places like Applebees, Texas Roadhouse, Fridays. Things like that. Also fast food.
• I would love to see more locally-owned Charleston-style restaurants (no national chains.) We love the addition of The Coastal Skillet but the limited hours are a bummer!
• I would like to see more clothing and children’s stores. Definitely a pharmacy as well since Publix is the only one at the moment. I also think a Chick-fil-A would do great on Clements Ferry.
• Bank of America. Goodwill!!
• I would like to see more thought go into low to moderate income properties. We are pricing out future generations of the workforce. There is not a 22-year-old that can afford a 500k [and up] or apartment in Charleston. We have driven out all our future generations and opened our wallets and arms to corporations and the rich fleeing other parts of the country paying cash for housing because they don’t like living [where they are from] only to get here and bring what they didn’t like there here. It’s getting out of hand!
• My wife needs a TJMax or Home Goods Store!!
• Lowe’s grocery, Harris Teeter, Urgent Care Clinic, Fish Market, farmers market area once a week, garden/plant nursery. Would be great if they are on the 526 end of Clements Ferry.
• I would like high-quality restaurants so I don’t have to go downtown and deal with parking.
• UPS Store, Culvers, Comeback Shack Five Guys, KFC/Popeyes/Churches, Chinese Buffet Restaurant, and Aldi/Lidl Supermarkets.
• Dedicated yoga studio
• Cease all multifamily. Re-engineer infrastructure to accommodate what short cited planners have approved.
