DI Inshore Fishing Club is a great group for good company and catching fish

The Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club is a wonderful organization. Its members are warm and genuine people that like to fish and love to do great things for our community. The Danziger Cup (Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament) is a great example. The club is so wonderful, I am surprised they let me be a member!

Every year, at the club’s annual holiday party, there is a raffle for a fishing trip with me. Bob Fountaine won the raffle last year. However, our collective schedules did not line up and our fishing trip never got scheduled. Thankfully, our schedules finally aligned on Oct. 27.

Bob met me on the dock around 2 p.m. Our plan was to target trout on the falling tide and try for redfish at dead low tide. We launched the skiff and ran up Beresford Creek.

While in transit, the depth finder showed a lot of fish holding around depth transitions in 10 feet of water. So, we started fishing adjacent to a dock with oysters that dropped off into 10 feet of water.

Our rods were rigged with Z-Man Finesse TRD lures on 1/6-ounce NedLockZ jigs. Bob’s TRD lure color was named The Deal and mine was Hot Snakes. I like to start fishing with multiple lure colors to see what the fish want that day.

When Bob made his first cast, I knew he was an excellent angler. His cast was smooth, effortless, and accurate. When fishing with lures, casting efficiency and accuracy are critical to success. Given Bob’s casting skills, I felt good about our chances of success.

It took a few minutes to locate the fish. But when we did, they were hungry and plentiful. Over the course of a couple of hours, Bob and I released a bunch of trout and redfish. As I recall, we even completed inshore slams by releasing one flounder each. Perfect weather. Hungry fish. Good company. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

If you want to meet your neighbors and learn more about fishing, think about joining the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club. Who knows, we may even end up fishing together!
