It’s quite an accomplishment to beat an undefeated team in a season.
It’s even more impressive to halt two team’s dreams of perfection.
Three teams? That’s almost an unheard of hat trick.
Unless you happen to be the Bishop England High School girls’ lacrosse team.
The Bishops have defeated three undefeated teams so far during the 2024 season, and what makes it even more impressive is that the Bishops beat three undefeated teams in consecutive fashion.
On March 11, the Bishops handed Wando its first loss of the campaign, a 14-4 decision.
On March 15, The Bishops halted Spartanburg’s dream of perfection with a 20-1 victory.
The following day, Chapin suffered its first loss, a 17-6 setback to the Bishops.
That’s three impressive decisions by a 51-11 margin.
“They all were (Class) 5-A teams,” said BE coach Jeff Weiner, whose team entered play this week with a 9-0 record. “And, we beat everyone. We try to get the best teams coming into the season, but that can be tough because it’s based on what the teams did the previous season.”
Weiner said it’s still hard to gauge just how good his team is despite its impressive start. The Bishops have outscored foes 161-14 in the nine games.
The veteran coach said a four-game stretch against out-of-state teams that began March 25 with a match against Medina, Ohio, would be a good measuring stick.
The Bishops also were scheduled to face a formidable team from Maryland before going on spring break.
After that, the Bishops are scheduled to face North Carolina powers Charlotte Catholic and Myers Park on April 4 and 5.
“We put the best teams in front of us, play them and see what happens,” Weiner said. “We try to get the best teams to come in. That’s what the team wants: to play the best.”
The Bishops, who had a 98-game winning streak come to an end last year when the South Carolina High School League ruled it used an ineligible player, continues to move up the charts when it comes to state and national rankings.
They began this week as the No. 2 team in the Palmetto State, while checking in at No. 14 in the nation in the latest MaxPreps.com poll of top lacrosse teams in the U.S.
The Bishops have put up impressive team numbers – and individual numbers.
Henley Bredemann, who will matriculate to the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., is having a season to remember.
The senior leads the Bishops with 32 goals, 31 assists, and 63 points. She also leads the Bishops with 21 turnovers and 26 ground balls.
Nini Clarke has been a force as well with 30 goals and 10 assists to account for 40 points.
Bo Rosato, who committed to Johns Hopkins early in the recruiting process, has shone brightly with 2.7 goals and 2.2 assists per outing.
Senior Lizzy Tompkins and junior Piper Hamrick have split duties at the keeper position and are allowing only 1.6 goals per game, recording four shutouts.
