Fishing against the odds while battling the wind, tide, and Brody’s bad bets

Wind and tide are a big influence on fishing conditions.

On Sunday, an unusually high tide and a strong northeasterly wind made fishing conditions less than optimal.

So, I decided to stay home and watch a few NFL games.

Perhaps even make a few small wagers to keep things interesting.

Unfortunately, Brody, the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog, does not excel at sport betting.

As a matter of fact, he is simply awful.

When I asked him to pick the over/under for the Buffalo Bills game, Brody picked a 20-gauge. He said it makes less noise than a 12.

With a clearer understanding of Brody’s sport betting limitations, I began to rethink my plan for the day.

About then, my old friend Jonathan called and invited Elliott and me to fish on his boat.

We discussed the less-than-optimal conditions and decided to fish anyway. Our plan was to fish, hopefully out of the wind, behind Sullivan’s Island.

Elliott and I met Jonathan at his house and made the short drive to the Sullivan’s Island boat landing.

As we launched the boat, conditions were not optimal. Conditions were like Brody’s sport betting advice. Awful, simply awful.

Undeterred, we launched the boat and began to fish.

The trolling motor struggled to hold the boat against the wind and the tide. This made fishing creek drains and marsh points problematic.

After about 30 minutes without a fish, Jonathan stopped fishing and focused 100% to properly position the boat.

A few casts later, Elliott hooked a redfish. It was not particularly large but we were happy to finally be on the board.

Elliott insisted that Jonathan be in the picture because he was instrumental in catching the fish.

If you only fish when conditions are optimal, you will not fish very much.

Of course, if you have a sports-betting dog, that would probably be okay.

As for Brody and me, we will just keep fishing.
