Osupure Karate on Daniel Island recently hosted testing for students advancing in their Wado Ryu karate training.
The formal evaluations are a critical step for karate practitioners moving from beginner to intermediate belt levels.
“Not all students are invited to test,” said Osupure Karate owner Sensei Glenn Raus. “Only those who have demonstrated proficiency with their kata and techniques in class are given test registration forms.”
In this latest round of testing, the 12 students who participated in the examination all passed and advanced.
“This group of testing students did a fantastic job,” Raus said.
The process of ranking is measured in kyu steps, with students advancing through levels that descend from 10th kyu to 1st kyu. Each rank is signified by a different belt color, symbolizing the student’s progress toward earning a black belt.
Testing at Osupure Karate occurs four times a year.
“And before they can test, their parents and teacher must sign off on the students’ good behavior at home and school.”
On average, students spend about five years honing their skills before qualifying to test for a 1st-degree black belt. Once a black belt is achieved, ranking transitions to dan, or degree levels, which ascend from 1st dan up to 10th.
Raus said moving up the ranks simply takes discipline within.
“Karate is an individual pursuit. With focused training, dedicated practice, and patience, anyone can excel in karate.”
The students will continue their martial arts journey at the dojo located at 295-B Seven Farms Drive.
