Belly-up to the oyster bars as extra daylight means more fishing

Daylight Saving Time began on March 9, so there is now more time to fish in the evening.

On Wednesday afternoon, Brody, the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog, and Elliott, my son, reminded me of this fact. They were planning to fish from 6 p.m. ’til sunset and asked me to join. Of course, I said YES!

The sun was shining when we pulled away from the dock. A steady breeze made it feel a bit cool, but not bad for the middle of March.

As we idled away from the dock, it was mid-tide and rising. The water temperature was 61 degrees. Our plan was to simply catch and release a few fish. We had no target species in mind.

Brody lay down in the late afternoon sun and took a nap. He was absolutely no help finding fish. So, I picked a shallow area, with lots of oysters, that was out of the wind.

Elliott began casting a Z-Man Finesse TRD on a 1/6-ounce NedlockZ jig. I picked up a rod rigged with Z-Man StreakZ 3.75 on a 1/8-ounce Trout Eye Finesse jig. Brody, well, he just continued to sleep.

We used the trolling motor to stay within easy casting distance of the oyster bars. On my second cast, I caught and released a trout. Then another and another. Elliott switched to a Finesse TRD lure that matched the Opening Night color of my StreakZ 3.75. He began catching trout as well.

When the trout bite slowed down, we moved to the next set of oyster bars. Elliott cast to the bar and immediately hooked up with a redfish. The sun was getting low on the horizon as he fought the fish.

Upon landing the redfish, Elliott asked me to position the boat so he could get a good picture. After a few position adjustments, he took the shot. With a few fish released and a good picture taken, we called it a day.
