Bishop England strikes back as playoff drama nears

Defending Region 6-AAAA football champ Bishop England kept its playoff chances alive with a 24-14 victory over Beaufort High School on Oct. 17 at Jack Cantey Stadium.

The win ended a two-game league losing streak and gave the Bishops a 6-2 mark, including 1-2 in region action after beating the Eagles for the second straight year. The Bishops currently hold the fourth and final playoff spot in the region with two weeks of regular-season play remaining.

The Bishops used a balanced offense to push their home record to 5-0 on the season. The Bishops churned for 142 yards rushing and 141 passing to win for the 15th time in 20 games under second-year coach Logan Hall.

All the scoring occurred in the first half. The Bishops led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and put up a pair of TDs in the second quarter.

Quarterback Quinn Mahoney completed 12 of 18 passing attempts for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He has 1,294 yards passing this fall and needs only 245 yards in the air to top 4,000 yards in his two seasons at BE.

Zach Balog caught four passes for 51 yards and a score. Ben Turner netted 70 receiving yards on five receptions. William Donato caught a 5-yard TD pass.

Mitchell Plaisance led the Bishops with 90 yards and a TD on 15 carries.

The Bishops travel to Bluffton for a Region 6-AAAA tussle in the penultimate week of the regular season. Bluffton is 6-2, 2-1 in the region, and is coming off a 55-12 victory over Colleton County.
