Iron Horses prepare for showdown between region unbeatens

The Philip Simmons High School football team scored another impressive Region 6-AA victory by trouncing Academic Magnet 57-0 at Ravenel Stadium on Oct. 17.

But the Iron Horses had little time to savor the win as coach Eric Bendig prepped his team for what might be the ultimate challenge of the penultimate week of the regular season.

The Iron Horses host Berkeley County rival Timberland High School in a showdown of the region’s only undefeated teams in league play as both teams enter Oct. 24 at 3-0.

The Iron Horses traveled to Timberland last fall and posted a 21-7 victory. The Iron Horses used the win as a springboard to go 5-0 in league play and earn their second region championship in the program’s brief history.

Last week, the Iron Horses dominated the Raptors with one big play after another as they tallied 437 yards in total offense.

The running game was potent as the Iron Horses averaged 13.1 yards per carry, finishing with 196 yards on the ground. Jeremiah Richardson led the way with two carries for 87 yards, including an 85-yard TD run.

The other big offensive news continues to be quarterback Hayes Goddard, who continues to improve his accuracy. He was 12-for-12 passing for 241 yards and three scores. The junior also scored a TD and collected 32 yards on the ground.

Ashton Kellermann caught two passes for 67 yards and a score, while Alex Tchoryk hauled in three passes for 70 yards and two TDs. Omonte Taylor added two scores.
