DI Historical Society leads cleanup at Lesesne Cemetery

Members of the Daniel Island Historical Society Cemetery committee were hard at work on Sat. Dec.13, at the historic Lesesne Cemetery on Daniel Island.

Volunteers, led by DIHS members Kim Sermersheim and Hugh Haynsworth, completed a variety of tasks, including weed eating and leaf blowing, cutting low limbs and palm branches, cleaning nine tombstones with special solutions, and cleaning and returning foot markers to original positions. Also assisting were Richard Raggo and Tory Sullivan. It is believed the burial site was first established in the 1700s.

“We thank each volunteer for their efforts to maintain these sacred sites and honor those laid to rest,” Sermersheim said. “Community members are invited to join the committee in the months ahead as care is provided to the historical cemeteries of Grove, Simmons, and Alston on Daniel Island, and at Old Ruins/McDowell and Nelliefield Creek Cemeteries on the Cainhoy Peninsula.”
