Making our island better, more beautiful

Recent meetings of the [neighborhood] boards of DICA and DITA, and Facebook posts, suggest that we are losing our priorities. 

Issues about public parking at the waterfront are valid. The rules for shared parking are for the entire island. With 15% of the given lot reserved for residents and commercial entities, trying to privatize the parking at your own building is a blatant power grab.  Bring on the parking lot wars! 

Our boards' singular purpose is protecting our existing assets: facilities or funds.  Enhance or add with existing funding or if there is a crying need. Not adding debt or higher fees. Not to leave a legacy. 

Trying to make the developer the enemy? They did an outstanding job in creating Daniel Island. Do we thank them every time we have a hurricane and we have zero stormwater problems, every time a house is sold with an increased value, every time we go through the roundabout and marvel at three churches, a children’s academy, an assisted living home and low-income housing highlighting the essence of what we want Daniel Island to be? Probably not! 

The Daniel Island Property Owners' Association team comes to work every day with the singular purpose of making our island better and more beautiful. Maybe weshould stop seeing them as antagonists but recognize them for the great assets to our well-being that they are. They have done outstanding jobs over the years. 

Could some things have been done better? Sure, always. But we did not move to Pleasantville: we moved to Daniel Island.
