There have been some good things with the Waterfront area. It is more attractive and functional. We love the Daniel Island Ferry and hope it can continue its runs to the city from there. We also love the views from the swings. But the Waterfront is designed more for the wealthy people who live in the expensive townhomes and condos or in large boats.
For many of us legacy Daniel Island families, our memories take us back to the “Turtle Park” and the festive events held in that area and the great quiet walks or runs on the path along the Wando. It has definitely changed – some for the better and some for the worse. For those just moving here, it’s “their” perceived Daniel Island and likely much more beautiful than where they moved from. But for us “oldies,” it’s not our small community island but a new Daniel Island, which we have to adjust to.
The loss of the Waterfront parking area is just another blow to us “regular” island folk who have seen a Daniel Island sell out to developers. The answer is always “this was planned” from the beginning. I suppose the people living in residences at the Waterfront who have parking will be the ones to sustain the restaurant patronage there. Most of us have no intention of walking blocks after parking to eat or get a drink there.
Finally, it is great hearing the North Island Tract is protected, but let's hope we can keep it as a green space or recreational area for residents and visitors and not another footprint for developers to ruin.
