Letter from the editor: What a year it’s been
As 2025 winds down, it’s hard not to reflect on a year of big changes, growth, and community moments here at The Daniel Island News. It’s been a year of transitions for our team, our office, and our neighborhood.
First, a heartfelt farewell to Sue Detar, our longtime publisher and owner, who helped shape the voice of our paper for more than two decades. Her retirement marked the end of an era, and we were happy to welcome our new owners, Jack and Kyle Osteen of The Sumter Item family, and Vince Johnson of DI Media Group. Their leadership has already brought fresh energy and vision to our newsroom.
This summer, we settled into our new office at 291 Seven Farms Drive, leaving behind 225 Seven Farms Drive – a move that symbolizes the growth we’ve experienced as a company. Along with that, we launched Best of Daniel Island, our first-ever readers’ choice contest, which has been a blast connecting with our community and celebrating local favorites.
2025 was also a year of stories that mattered.
From the excitement of the Credit One Charleston Open, where we interviewed world-class tennis players, to navigating neighborhood conversations about e-bikes, the Walter-the-alligator incident, new residential and business developments, and security issues like school weapon screeners: we’ve covered the moments that keep our community talking.
And our hard work didn’t go unnoticed. The Daniel Island News earned 17 journalism awards at the South Carolina Press Association’s 2024 news contest. We’re proud, humbled, and motivated to do even more next year.
Ending the year on a high note, we’re thrilled to have Publix back after nearly a year-long closure. It’s the little victories that make life on Daniel Island feel like home.
As we look ahead to 2026, we’re excited for what’s next: new ideas, new projects, and new stories, with the same commitment to keeping you informed, connected, and occasionally entertained.
