Picking the right college can be tough for music students

Will the right school or college make a big difference in the development, growth, and success of our students? Absolutely!

If students want to pursue a career in the performing arts, such as dance, drama, music, or musical theatre, does it pay to go for a selective, “name” university? Is it worth the additional cost?

This is a common question both parents and students struggle with. The answer is complex. It depends on various factors. Every family is different. Every student is different. Programs vary in excellence and cost among colleges.

When students aspire to artistic careers, they need to have the basic ingredients: talent, ambition, and a solid work ethic. The quality and reputation of the school and strength of the program could also make a difference. For example, a conservatory will provide intense professional training as compared to a bachelor’s degree.

It’s not easy for high school students to choose their educational future, and often, their aspirations are marred by unrealistic dreams. Their personal self-assessment must be brutally honest. Students must take time to evaluate their values, artistic ability, learning style, and personality preferences in order to choose the right school and course of study.

I’m not one for espousing expensive colleges, but for the serious artist, it may pay off to seek admission to a highly reputed program because a career in the performing arts needs extensive professional training, mentoring, and professional advice. This path would fit the high school student whose level of motivation and achievement is demonstrably higher relative to the competition.

Performing arts majors need to assess what they want to gain by going to either a college or a conservatory. Often, their decisions are contingent on parental approval, peer pressure, and what teachers think. If they are also happy pursuing other areas, it’s prudent to have a back up plan in another area of study. Careers in the performing arts require self-discipline, resilience, and talent.
