Reader poll: Readers weigh in on severe weather preparations

Poll question: South Carolinians are well versed in hurricane season dangers and most are well prepared for what might hit our coastline. But other weather-related dangers are becoming more prevalent, more frequent and more destructive. Thunder and lightning storms, extreme heat, tornadoes and more are becoming fairly common, much like the July 5 storm that just impacted Daniel Island and the surrounding area. How prepared are you for these other types of severe weather occurrences? What severe weather conditions worry you most and how do you prepare for them?

Comments:

• We installed lightning rods all over our house when we built as well as a large generator, impact resistant windows – $1,000 each! And solid brick foundation (elevated) as well as brick porches and steps. Be prepared!

• The spring season worries me the most. There seems to be a trend of more frequent severe weather, some of which includes tornado threats, moving to the area.

• Wind damage, fire. Keep the yard as clear as possible.

• Category 5+ hurricane I evacuate! Ready for everything else. Don’t over hype the weather due a few lightning bolts and media HYPE. Weather changes every day and has for thousands of years.

• Hurricanes - evacuate BEFORE it’s mandatory because road reversals do not allow those in Charleston (Daniel Island-Clements Ferry) area to use 95-North. Makes no sense because so many of us are from the North. I have no $$$$ for hotels & restaurants and could never stay in those horrible, noisy overcrowded, and unsanitary shelters. Most of us are on fixed incomes so we are left with no choice but to evacuate days ahead of time ... just in case ... because we need to use I-95 to get to relatives homes in VA, MD, etc.

Next Reader Survey: What’s needed on Clements Ferry?

With more and more housing and apartment developments springing up along the Clements Ferry corridor, the need for resident services also increases. While there are some retail and hospitality services available – the Point Hope development has sprouted several opportunities – the area has previously been better known for more office and commercial operations. What types of retail and hospitality services would you like to see added along the corridor? Share your thoughts at surveymonkey.com/r/ClementsFerryBiz or use the QR code by Sunday, July 23, at 5 p.m.
