We asked: In the rom-com genre when the main characters are introduced to each other it’s often under a situation they call the “meet-cute.”
They reach for the same cup of coffee at Starbucks. They grab the wrong bags at the airport. They literally run into each other — driving, jogging, leaving their favorite bakery. Tell us how you met your significant other.

• It was 1982 and a large group of friends were enjoying brunch together after church. The air sparkled with interesting conversation and lots of laughter. We were joined by a very handsome young man, a newly minted Marine Corps Officer, who happened to be sporting a receding hairline. Someone made a “bald” joke and immediately everyone held their breath wondering what might follow. Would the new guy be offended or get his feelings hurt? He paused, looked around the table, shrugged his shoulders and said, “If the rest of you want to waste your hormones on hair, go right ahead.” And, that was the beginning of 43 years of sharing life with my amazing man who is comfortable in his skin, has a lively sense of humor, is strong, compassionate, smart as a whip, and makes every day a joyful experience.
• We worked together and couldn’t stand each other. We grew to become friends. When his father passed away I was there for him and we haven’t been apart since. Here we are 8 years later, three dates later, three pets later.
• Years of courtship on FarmersOnly.Com before meeting! Had to make sure I wasn’t wasting my time. Sparks flew immediately (not real sparks, that’s dangerous) but metaphorically there were sparks in my heart. Turns out he’s not a farmer, and neither am I, but I still trust him. Because farming is his passion, just virtually on FarmVille. We’ve found a connection through a virtual farm and have never looked back, I finally believe in love again thanks to farmers.com.
• He sold me a recliner.
• Met through a friend at World Day.
• We found each other on Grindr!
• My wife Emily and I met at the end of our senior year at The University of Alabama. We actually met through a dating app at the start of COVID-19. She was from around Atlanta, Georgia, and I lived in North Alabama. We could not meet for a while due to the pandemic, but once we were able to go on our first date, I knew that we would get married. We were inseparable our senior year at UA and eventually moved to Charleston for me to start law school. We got engaged, married, finished law school, and started our careers — Emily as a teacher on Daniel Island and myself as an attorney. We recently welcomed our sweet daughter Ellery and have an adorable orange cat named West Ashley.
• I moved from Ohio to North Carolina in 1974 just before my senior year in high school. My future wife Lisa was a classmate and friend in my new school, but I did not see her again after 1975. We both moved on with our lives, and both got married and divorced. We were friends on Facebook, but never talked on the phone until 2018. Lisa came to Charleston for a visit, and even though I had not seen her in 43 years, it was like no time had passed. And she was and still is beautiful. We married in 2021.
