Readers speak out on casting their 2023 vote

Poll question: While the absence of any national races may dim some voter enthusiasm, the importance of voting in the 2023 election on Nov. 7 was nonetheless important. Some would argue local elections are the most important as those officials are the ones that impact you the most every day. And voting is easier than ever – absentee, early voting locations down the block, as well as Election Day at the polls. Before election day, we asked readers, “How will you be casting your ballot?”

Results: Note: the responses “I won’t vote” and “Other” received no votes.

Early voting in person 63%

Election Day at the poll 25%

Absentee 12%

What do you think would encourage more people to vote when there’s no national agenda?

Comments:

• The “planks” or specific issues in the platform of the political parties’ candidate should encourage more people to vote. What do the party and its candidates stand for and is it for the good and good governance of all?

• Mail-in voting, automatic voter registration with drivers license, rank choice ballots.

• Tell them (again) that local elections direct their lives more directly.

• More education on how much local elections can impact our community. Candidates soon learn which communities turn out to vote and they are the ones that get the additional benefits and services after the election.

• People need to realize that local elections have the biggest impact on everyday life. President and Congress do not impact traffic, zoning, schools, public safety, etc. It is ironic to think that the election that means the most (local), gets the lowest participation!!

• Realizing that local elections have huge implications.

• Self-respect should make each citizen cast their vote. And if you do not vote, you have no right to complain.

• People need to know that local elections are just as important and needed as national elections. Local elections can determine (I believe) the outcome of most national agendas.

Next week:

What are you thankful for?

Sometimes with all the bad news surrounding us it can be difficult to remember all the good things in our lives - friends, family, our health, good food and stunning sunsets to name a few. As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s an excellent time to take a moment to think about all the gifts life has given us and appreciate those around us.
Tell us what you are thankful for this holiday? Share your thoughts at surveymonkey.com/r/Thanksgiving_2023 by Sunday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m.
