Residents invited to shape Daniel Island transportation ideas
The response to my April column (“Why It’s Time For Public Bus Services”) about transportation between Daniel Island and downtown Charleston has been encouraging. Many residents have expressed the same concerns: increasing traffic, limited parking, and the lack of practical alternatives to driving.
That's why we're holding an informal community meeting – not to promote one solution, but to hear from residents and identify the options that deserve serious consideration. Some favor a passenger ferry. Others believe a CARTA shuttle or express bus could provide a faster, less expensive, and more practical alternative.
The goal is to listen, exchange ideas, and determine what the community would actually support. We'll discuss questions such as: What transportation options would residents use? How often should service run? Where should it stop? What would make people leave their cars at home? And how can we present a unified message to CARTA and our elected officials?
The meeting will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Daniel Island Recreation Center meeting room. It is purposely scheduled to end before the 6:30 p.m. Daniel Island Neighborhood Association meeting, where Charleston Mayor William Cogswell, members of Charleston City Council, Berkeley County Council, and other community leaders will be present [at the Daniel Pointe Retirement Community theater.]
I encourage everyone interested in improving transportation on Daniel Island to attend both meetings. Our discussion can help organize residents' thoughts before many of the decision-makers gather just minutes later. If we speak with a thoughtful, unified voice, our chances of being heard – and making real progress – will be much greater.
Whether you already have strong opinions or simply want to learn more, your participation matters. This is the first step toward building practical transportation solutions that will benefit Daniel Island for years to come.
