Community newspapers across our state will celebrate Sunshine Week March 16-22.
Sunshine Week is not just about local news coverage. It’s a nonpartisan collaboration among groups in journalism, civic, education, government and private sectors that shines a light on the importance of public records and open government.
As a weekly newspaper, we have two editions that overlap with Sunshine Week. This week, our Associate Publisher Patrick Villegas shares some information on how we access information from government and how you can too, page 16.
In this week’s paper we also share stories about our new Kids Say reporter and about what it’s like to be a community newspaper reporter. Check out those stories on pages 14-15.
Next week, we’ll share stories about how efforts to report on government activities have impacted communities and individuals, as well as provide additional tips on how citizens can access information from government through Freedom of Information Act and Right to Know laws.
I also encourage you to take our reader survey and share ideas about the types of stories and any specific stories you’d like to see us cover. Use the QR code below. Many thanks!
