Why Berkeley County EMS is searching for a new home

Dear neighbors,

There is quite a bit of misinformation floating around the community regarding the City of Charleston’s Fire Department and the Berkeley County EMS, and I would like to provide some clarity as your Charleston City Council representative.

As Daniel Island has grown, so has the need for expanded fire service. To maintain the city’s ISO 1 fire rating and Accredited Agency Status – which helps to lower homeowners’ insurance costs – the Daniel Island fire station must add an additional fire engine and crew.

Here, I’d like to brag on our fire department a little bit. Of the more than 17,000 fire departments in the United States, only 492 are rated ISO 1, and there are only 338 fire departments in the world with Accredited Agency Status. To make room for this expansion of our fire department, the station will no longer be able to house Berkeley County EMS, as it has generously for many years.

In addition, this facility is our police station for Team 5. This facility, which has been open for nearly 20 years, was also home to our recreation department until the recreation center was built at Governors Park, and is in need of some renovations to improve the conditions for our police and firefighters.

The City of Charleston is working with Berkeley County to identify an appropriate location for EMS that ensures quick response times and continued high-quality service for Daniel Island residents.

We understand the importance of clear communication and will work with community partners to share updates as plans develop. Our priority is keeping Daniel Island families safe by ensuring both fire and EMS services are equipped to respond effectively.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Boyd Gregg
