Bishops’ Logan Hall earns football coach of year honors

Coaches’ group also awards two Iron Horses
The Bishop England and Philip Simmons football teams had impressive seasons in 2024, and all that hard work, sacrifice, and determination are being celebrated in the postseason as all-star teams are announced.

That includes Lower State football honors sponsored by the South Carolina Football Coaches Association.

The group tapped first-year Bishop England football coach Logan Hall as the Class AAAA Lower State coach of the year after leading the Bishops to a 9-3 record and the Region 6-AAAA championship.

Selections from Philip Simmons include player Daniel Scarth and assistant coach Tamyn Garrick.

Scarth is the Class AA Lower State special team’s player of the year, while Garrick was named the Class AA Lower State assistant coach of the year. The Iron Horses posted a 10-3 record and won the Region 6-AA championship.

Not many observers predicted the reversal of fortunes Bishop England enjoyed under coach Logan Hall, who was in his inaugural year as head coach.

He inherited a program that won just seven games against 25 losses in the past three seasons. He stressed unity, hard work, and brotherhood, and that formula produced the 9-3 record and the 6-AAAA championship.

Bishop England named Hall coach of the Bishops in February after serving as Pinewood Prep’s offensive coordinator. He helped the Panthers become one of the most explosive offenses in SCISA, averaging 39 points a contest.

Hall played at Laurens High School and originally signed to play football at Coastal Carolina but ended up at the University of South Carolina. He served in various coaching roles under USC legend Steve Spurrier and former coach Will Muschamp.

He promised to rebuild BE, a program that slipped in recent years after winning back-to-back state championships in 2011 and 2012.

“Awesome. It is an awesome opportunity and an awesome job,” Hall said when he was named coach. “I am honored and extremely excited to be named the head football coach at Bishop England. I am looking forward to building a solid foundation and creating a winning culture that the players, students, fans, faculty, administration, and alumni can be proud of.”

The Iron Horses’ Daniel Scarth was named the Lower State special teams player of the year after shining as the team’s long snapper.

“Daniel is very deserving of his award as he handles all punts and field goal snaps,” Philip Simmons coach Eric Bendig said. “He was 100 percent on his execution of snaps in our kicking game. He is also a tremendous cover tackler for us in all phases of our kicking game. He has a real chance to play the position in college and is definitely the best long snapper in the area.”

Tamyn Garrick, the Lower State assistant coach of the year, graduated from Presbyterian College in 2015, where he played quarterback. One of his stops on his coaching journey included his alma mater.

“Coach Garrick is deserving of this award due to many factors,” Bendig said. “On the field, he is prepared and innovative with our offense as I have ever been around. He is always transforming and doing what our players are best at, skill-wise.”

Coach Garrick is also involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is active in the lives of his players and students, Bendig said.
