Bishops dominate Raptors with 33-6 win, Iron Horses fall to Oceanside
The Bishop England High School football team has a chance to finish above .500 this season after a rough start to the 2018 season. The Bishops opened the season with four losses in five games.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Bishops must win on the road against Georgetown this week and survive a road trip to Manning to accomplish the fete. And that’s the difficult part for the Bishops, who are 3-1 at home and 0-3 on the road.
The Bishops continued to show improvement, and quarterback Eddie Marinaro continued to gain confidence as the Bishops picked up a 33-6 Region 8-AAA victory over Academic Magnet in a game played at Jack Cantey Stadium on Oct. 12.
The Bishops, who improved to 2-1 in league play, jumped to a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and expanded the cushion to 33-0 at halftime.
The Bishops outgained the Raptors 216-107 in total offense as the defense played well. The Bishop defenders recovered a fumble and picked off two Raptor passes.
Marinaro, meanwhile, was perfect on all three of his pass attempts, throwing for 61 yards and two touchdowns. He completed a 3-yard TD pass to Chase Daniel and a 40-yard score to Chris Dengler.
Marinaro also had a big night on the ground. He carried only four times but netted 75 yards, including a run of 43 yards. Marinaro is a big reason why the Bishops have won two straight. Last week, he tallied 323 yards in total offense in a Homecoming win over Waccamaw, including a season-high 257 yards passing.
Running back Michael Long helped give the Bishops the big cushion in the first half. He opened the scoring with a 5-yard run. Marinaro threw a TD pass to Daniel to make it 13-0 and made it 20-0 with the TD pass to Dengler. Long scored his second TD of the night on a 13-yard run. Marinaro closed out the BE scoring with a 12-yard TD run.
OCEANSIDE 55, PHILIP SIMMONS 0
Philip Simmons struggled all night in a 55-0 loss to Oceanside Collegiate, but the good news is the Iron Horses can take a big step toward reaching the playoffs with a win over Region 6-AA opponent Garrett Tech.
Oceanside won its fifth straight game to improve to 6-1 and 3-0 in league play. Timberland also is 3-0. There is a logjam for third place as Philip Simmons, Garrett Tech and Burke all have 1-2 records. The top four teams in the region qualify for the postseason play.
Oceanside Collegiate held the Iron Horses, 2-6, to 183 yards in total offense in 46 plays. The Iron Horses gained 169 yards on the ground. Solly Bess led the way with 16 carries for 89 yards, including a long of 37 yards.
Quarterback Omaro Asby carried eight times for 56 yards.
He completed only 4 of 15 passing for 14 yards.
Friday’s game against Garrett Tech will be a home game for the Iron Horses.
