Bishops find success at Father Kelly Classic track meet

Bishop England High School hosted its annual Father Kelly Classic, and the Bishop thinclads fared well as the girls finished second and the boys held down third place in the team standings. 

Cane Bay won the girls’ crown with a 153-116 win over the Bishops. Hanahan was third with 112. 

The Cobras also won the boys’ title with a 154-150 decision over Ridgeland. The Bishops were third with 130. 

Grace Buss led the BE girls with a victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute and 9.12 seconds, while finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash. 

The 4x400-meter relay team was second while Miranda Ponkow and Katie Griffin won silver medals in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively. 

Sally Tillman and Caitlin Brownlee finished in a tie for third in the high jump, and Ella Harvey was third in the 3,200-meter run. Anna Kate Christy won bronze in the discus. 

Jack Perry led the Bishop boys with a pair of gold medals, with a heave of 39.59 meters in the discus and a put of 12.9 in the shot. Lorenzo Palagano cleared 3.86 meters to win the pole vault and was second in the 110-meter high hurdles. 

Arlo Church and Gabe Hislop also had gold-medal efforts. Church turned in a clocking of 2:11.08 to win the 800-meter run, while Hislop won the 1,600-meter run in 4:45.42. 

The Bishops had impressive efforts in the sprints as William Mote won silver in the 100-meter dash, and Jackson Muller was third in the 400-meter dash. 

The 4x400-meter relay team captured a silver medal and Ben Huntington was second in the 3,200 run. Logan Schallenberger was second in the 1,600 run, and Brandon Sawyer was third in the 800. 

 
COACHES CLASSIC ELITE MEET 

Philip Simmons and Bishop England had a handful of athletes who competed at the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic Elite Meet, which was held April 17 at Whale Branch Early College in Seabrook. 

Hilton Head won the girls’ title with 44 points, while Fort Dorchester was second with 41. Mauldin was third with 34 points. The Iron Horses finished in a tie for 18th place with 17 points, and BE was tied for 23rd with 12 points. 

Westwood won the boys’ crown with a 56-45.5 victory over Seneca. Cane Bay was third with 45. The Bishops finished in a tie for 40th place with six points, while PSHS was tied for 50th place with three points. 

Flynn Taylor finished second in the 800-meter run, while the 4x100-meter relay team also captured a silver medal to lead PSHS. Lilah May finished eighth in the high jump. 

Katie Griffin led the BE girls with a silver medal in the pole vault. Kinsley Watson was fifth in the javelin. 

Connor Good won a bronze medal in the 1,600 run to lead the Bishop boys. 

Grady Castiglia was sixth in the 3,200 run for the PSHS boys’ top finish.
