Bishops girls place 3rd, boys 4th at Lower State track meet
The Bishop England High School track and field program has an impressive number of athletes headed to the Class AAAA state championships following a strong showing at a May 8 state qualifier at Wilson High School in Florence, South Carolina.
The Bishop girls finished in third place behind Hilton Head and Hartsville. The Seahawks tallied 131 points to Hartsville’s 100.5. The Bishops scored 97.
The Bishop boys held down fourth place in the 10-team event. May River won with 125 while Hartsville tallied 118. Hilton Head was third with 91, and the Bishops had 89.
The meet was originally scheduled for May 7 at Woodland High School, but inclement weather pushed the meet back a day and changed the venue to Florence.
The Bishop girls had three gold-medal efforts. Grace Buss finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute and 7.42 seconds. Katie Griffin cleared 3.73 meters in the pole vault to win, while Kinsley Watson’s throw of 36.46 in the javelin was good for gold.
Nora Brahim picked up a silver medal in the 3,200-meter run and a bronze in the 1,600-meter run.
Olivia Allen finished second in the 400-meter dash, while the Bishops’ 4x800- and 4x400-meter relay teams both finished in third place.
Lorenzo Palagano led the Bishop boys with a silver medal in the pole vault and bronze in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Gabe Hislop was second in the 800-meter run, and Jackson Miller was third.
The Bishops earned three additional bronze medals. William Mote was third in the 400 dash, Logan Schallenberger was third in the 3,200, and the 4x800 relay team captured bronze as well.
The Bishops’ season concludes May 14 with the State Championships at Richland Northeast High School in Columbia.
