Bishops track and field teams finish runner-ups at regionals

The Bishop England High School track and field teams are among the most successful in the Palmetto State.

The girls’ team owns 14 state championships and two second-place finishes while the boys have won four state championships and have four state runners-up efforts to their credit.

Both teams were impressive at the April 29 Class 6-AAAA Region Championships, which were contested at Beaufort High School as the Bishops bid for more state championship meet glory.

The Bishops, who are competing at the Class AAAA level for the second and final year, finished in second place in both meets.

The Beaufort girls defeated Bishop England 194-156 with Hilton Head holding down third place with 131.

May River won the boys’ crown with a 194-156 victory over the Bishops. Hilton Head was third with 127.

The Bishop girls had three athletes earn gold medals.

Grace Buss won the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute and 6.23 seconds. The Bishops won two field events. Katie Griffin cleared 3.36 meters to win the pole vault, and Kinsley Watson won the javelin with a throw of 33.53 meters.

The Bishop boys won four gold medals.

Charlie Malinowski claimed first place in the 400 hurdles with an effort of 1:01.23, and the 4x800-meter relay team won in 8:35.08.

Jack Perry recorded a distance of 38.56 meters to win the discus, and Richard Miller won the javelin with a throw of 39.92 meters.

The Bishops will compete at the Class AAAA state qualifier May 7 at Woodland High School. The season concludes May 14 with the State Championships at Richland Northeast High School in Columbia, South Carolina.
